What is the rationale behind replacing the Learn-To-Swim Programme (LTSP) and National Survival Swimming Award (NASSA) with SwimSafer programme?
Answer :-
A review initiated by the National Water Safety Council (NWSC) in 2008 determined that an integrated programme combining the merits of the LTSP and NASSA to form a single national framework, which is known as SwimSafer programme. This programme is to ensure that students learn basic swimming, survival and lifesaving skills concurrently.

Q2. Will the LTSP and NASSA cease to exist with the implementation of the SwimSafer?
Answer :-
As the SwimSafer is designated as the replacement programme for the LTSP and NASSA, both the latter programmes would be discontinued with effect from 5 July 2010.

Q3. Why must the swimming instructor attend SwimSafer Instructor Course (SSIC) in order to teach this programme?
Answer :-
As the SwimSafer is a new programme, there is a need for existing instructors to attend a 2 days conversion course to familiarise themselves with the philosophy and methodology of the SwimSafer programme.

Q4. What are the differences in this new SwimSafer programme from the previous Learn-To-Swim Programme?
Answer :-
SwimSafer programme is a six-stage level which incorporated progressive elements of swimming, water survival and lifesaving skills at each level.

Q5. If the instructor does not wish to teach the SwimSafer programme can the instructor continue to teach private swimming classes at the Singapore Sports Council's (SSC) Sports and Recreation Centres (SRCs)?
Answer :-
It is a requirement for all instructors teaching private swimming classes in SRC to be part of the SwimSafer programme.

Q6. Any absenteism during the class will not be entertained. Any absence will be considered a lesson due to the slot allocated and scheduled for you.

Q: School examination period, can my children stop for 1 month?
It is not really advisable for beginners to stop swimming lessons when they are actually picking up the skills/strokes. If you interrupt lessons for 1 month or in-between and decide to resume lessons again, they might forget the learnt skills and have to start from scratch again. So try your utmost best to attend your weekly swimming lessons. It takes 12 weeks to condition your body but 2 weeks to be back to scratch. Swimming is good for the mind, body and soul. It helps clears examination blues.

Q: What should I do if I need to discontinue the class?
You must make use of the standard form provided by the management or submit a written note. A one-month notice is required. Note: Absence from lesson does not indicate withdrawal from class unless the withdrawal form is received.

Q: Are survival skills and courses included in the course?
Yes. Students will be introduced to water safety skills and survival skills throughout their progression. Students have to meet requirements and prerequisites, that is mastery of the correct stroke techniques, swim distances with ease, attain water safety knowledge and are comfortably to meet the requirements set by the Singapore Sport Council [NASSA] will be eligible to take a test. NASSA test are conducted twice a year in our school. We maintain our objective as stated above.

Q: What is the difference between private swimming lesson and group swimming lesson?
Private swimming lesson usually ranges from individual one to one to small group lesson arranged by you, our prospective client. We will send our coaches to your desired location to conduct the lesson at your desired timing. Minimum requirement is to complete 4 lessons in a month.

For group swimming lesson, an arranged pre-scheduled timetable and location will be forwarded to you via e-mail. You may select the most suitable timing and location from the timetable if you wish to join our existing group lesson. Group swimming lessons may not be suitable for children younger than 4 years old.

Q: Are private lessons better than big group lessons?
Below are some guidelines to assist you in making a better decision. Depending on the age, gender and goals of the swimmer, here are some points to consider:

· For beginner children above the age of 5, private classes are not recommended. Children learn from one another. They feed off or mimic with each other in their regular behaviors and therefore do better in a group environment.

· A very fearful child below the age of 5, who is not functioning in a group may benefit from private or semi-private classes. Our coaches recommend that children with no basic swimming knowledge should take up private classes for a trial period of 2 months before they join a group classes.

· An adult or teenage who is interested in attaining a specific goal could be recommended for private classes. E.g. Fitness, Stroke Correction…If parents or children cannot accommodate the big group lesson timing, then they can opt for private, semi-private or small group classes in which they have to gather their own team of people.

SWIMMING - FAQS SECTION 2

Q: Can I choose between a male and female swimming coach?
Yes. You can definitely choose the gender of coach you are comfortable with. However, female coaches are in high demand and so there are limited time slot available. If you wish to have a female swimming coach, please indicate during enrolment form for prior arrangement.

Q: What do I need to bring for my swimming lesson?
You need to have your own swim gear, goggles and float board for the first lesson. Your swimming coach will advise you to purchase other equipments if necessary. A student record card will be issued to all students upon enrolment.

Q: Why do I feel that my child is doing the same skill over and over again?
Repetition after repetition, Practice, Practice, Practice! It seems silly and even downright boring for us as adults to work with or watch our children performing the same skills over and over again; but remember practicing a skill helps reduce the anxiety level. Practice makes perfect and repetition makes it instinctive.

Q: What happens if my child is water phobic and is afraid to get into the pool?
If your child is 3 or 4 years old and is afraid of getting into the pool, there is no reason to rush them into swimming lessons. Don’t Despair. The ideal solution is encouraging your child to join you in the shallow end of the pool just to splash water, play and have fun. Little by little, get them used to the idea that the pool is a wonderful and fun place. When your child does begin swimming lessons, go with them and cheer them on. Stay on the side of the pool until your child is ready to stay alone.

Q: What causes fear of water?
Some of the more common causes of early fear of the water have to do with the way parents relate to their children in and around water. These causes include:-
· Being forced into water activities before being properly prepared.
· Being brought by parents who are afraid of the water and have either knowingly or unknowingly communicated this fear to their children.
· Being involved in or witnessing a traumatic water accident.

Q: What do I do when it rains?
You can liaise directly with your coach or vice versa with regards to your class status during bad weathers. However, please note that your coach may not be contactable when he/she is coaching. Swimming lessons are conducted as per normal EXCEPT if there is lighting activity.

The following applies:

1) ½ Toddler / Water Familiarize
NO replacement class accorded.

2) All other programs
Exercise sessions are conducted - No replacement class accorded.

SWIMMING - FAQS SECTION 1

Q: Are your swim coaches certified?
Rest Assured. Our NROC coaches are certified with credentials from the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) and/or Singapore Swimming Teachers’ Association (SSTA), Singapore Life Saving Society (SLSS) and AUSTSWIM (AUS). In addition, all our coaches are First Aid, CPR and AED trained.

Q: How do you monitor the progress of the students?
Our swim lessons are performance based. Students progress at their own comfortable pace. The student’s progress is tracked and documented through our swimming course curriculum.

Q: How long will it take my child to learn how to swim?
Every child is different and therefore it is impossible to give an exact answer to this question. Each child progress at a different pace and has a different personality. However, practice and exposure are the keys to learning, therefore if you want your child to learn fast you need to take them to the pool regularly to practice. For individual with water phobia, the process will take longer. Don’t rush; your child will definitely enjoy the learning process.

Q: Why do infants and young toddlers’ class have shorter lesson periods?
Research shows that young children have shorter concentration span. Therefore, they will get tired quickly and tend to reject any other information if the lesson continues on for too long. Keeping the class period shorter will keep them happy.

Q: Where do you normally conduct your swimming lessons?
We can conduct private swimming lesson island-wide. All we need is just authorizing access to the pool. All group lessons are conducted at SSC Delta and Toa Payoh Swimming Complex.

Q: How do I enroll?
Registration should be made in advance before the lesson commence. The reason is because the swim coach has to accommodate to your lessons timing so that they can make themselves free on that specific day and time. You may call our hotline at 978 555 78 for information or request for more info via e-mail. We will provide you with useful information about the policies of the swim school. It is important that the parent and child are agreeable to the policies of the school before they sign up. The objectives of the school and parent’s outlook must be aligned and synchronized to ensure greater cooperation. Evaluation is by appointment only.

Q: What is the payment policy?
All payment should be made in advance before commencement of lessons and subsequent fees are to be paid on the first week of the month. Mode of payment is via cheque or cash.

Q: How long does it take to complete the entire program?
Our swim programs are performance-based, which means that the kids will progress when they demonstrate that they've mastered the required skills and knowledge. Because some learn faster than others, course duration varies. Generally it will take 2 - 2½ years to complete the entire program (Station 1-8) for a beginner. The learning ability will also depend on the child’s learning curve.

Q: How many children in a class?

The student and coach ratio for all programs is 8:1. Ratio increases only at comp. squad levels.

SWIM FITNESS / STROKE CORRECTION PROGRAM

Swim Fitness/Stroke Correction
* Duration : 45 minutes per lesson

Designed for:
This program is specially tailored for all age group swimmers who have advanced swimming ability, knowledge of all four strokes, and/or swim competitively, as well as for those who simply keen in keeping fit and healthy. Based on the individuals’ performance, we will then enhance our students’ abilities to higher achievement in the NASSA awards, Lifesaving course or be train in our COMP squad, in accordance to their interest and liking.

Our Fee:
Price (SGD) / per month / per student

Private Lesson
Private 1 to 1 : $260
2 in a group : $200
3 in a group : $160
4 in a group : $120
5-6 in a group : $80

Group Lesson
$60

Note : All prices are subjected to changes without prior notice.

YOUNG TODDLER LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM

Young Toddler Learn-To-Swim
* Duration : 30 minutes per lesson
** Parent in-water involvement is compulsory during pool lesson

Designed for:
The young toddler program is specially tailored for kids aged 2 – below 4 years old. One of the fundamental key elements in our coaching technique is teaching our students an in-depth understanding of the water first. This is unique way of teaching swimming that educates children & adults alike to learn to “adapt in the water” for a lifetime through safety and enjoyment.

At C.A.R.L., our personalized system is performance based; where coaching is done at an individual’s comfortable pace even when the lessons are taught in groups. This allows the individual to progress in a non-threatening learning environment, to pick up and adapt to the skills easily.

The Important of Swimming Lessons
DROWNING IS A SILENT EVENT …. AND IT IS PREVENTABLE!!

Announcing this in Parliament on Tuesday, 19 July 2005, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Vivian Balakrishnan said “Every single death by drowning was one too many”. Between year 2001 and 2004, there was an average of 17 cases of drowning each year – 41% occurred at sea, 13% in rivers and 10% in swimming pool and reservoirs. [All figures are extracted from www.channelnewsasia.com, dd. 19 July 2005]

Singapore Sports Council (SSC) is looking at encouraging more youths to learn swimming as a life-skill. If a person is able to swim, he is less likely to drown. C.A.R.L. shares the SSC’s concern and is in deep consideration for children who quickly learn lifesaving swimming skill and just as quickly forget those skills due to a lack of opportunity to practice over a long period of time. We strongly encourage parents to spread out swim lessons with at least once or twice a week schedule, year round. Would you consider giving your child 12 weeks of piano lessons and then quitting for the next 40 weeks? Swim lessons (like piano lessons) require ongoing reinforcement and repetition. Choose your child’s schedule of learning carefully.

Only swimming skills that are remembered can save a life.

At C.A.R.L., We Redefine Swimming Lessons

We believe swimming lessons are an investment for life, so all C.A.R.L. coaches are highly skilled and nationally accredited with NROC and/or AUSTSWIM certification. C.A.R.L. is also Royal Life Saving accredited and our highly qualified coaching staffs are well trained presenters in CPR and First Aid.

We believe most drowning can be prevented by teaching a child to swim well and by educating adults about the importance of supervision regardless of swimming ability.

We teach a depth of understanding and proficiency in the water that leads to a healthy respect and allows each child to explore and enjoy the water.

We strive to provide the best learning environment possible so every student will be able to experience the joys of water and the thrill of attaining new skills.

We feel our methods aid your child's development of self-confidence, self worth and purpose by showing a child, through love, affection, and fun that their goals can be accomplished.

We know swimming, when taught well, provides a lifetime of enjoyment and water safety, It is an excellent way to get cardiovascular exercise and is also a great stress reducer.

We are committed to make our learn-to-swim program an enjoyable and fun experience. That's why our classes are small to allow more individual attention, with students and instructor ratio of 8:1. Your regular attendance and loving praise also helps.

We produce incredible results because we do not push our students beyond what they can emotionally accept and physically accomplish.

We create swimmers who are at ease in the water and learn new stroke skills naturally.

Our competitive prices are reflective of the excellence of service that you deserve.

CoachCarl Aquatics & CoachCarl
Race : Eurasian

Personal Portfolio
Due to ardent passion in scuba diving and adventure sports, Carl founded his aquatic centre in early 1994, after completing his Instructor certification with PADI Inc,.

Carl's commitment to his greatest passion came to a temporary halt due to a heart attack in the year 2000. He was only age 32 then! Everything from thence onwards began became an icon story of an individual determined to make a comeback into the industry which he loved so much.

During his recuperative period, he embarked onto swimming to stay fit and healthy. Much to his surprise, this period marked a new chapter onto his life. He realized that swimming was a good form of exercise as well as an important lifeskill for anyone who required rehabilitation and survival skills. During this routine check-up in 2003, his personal cardiologist certified him certified him medically fit for diving again.

Currently, he is coupled with several distinguished certifications to coach swimming as well as advance aquatics. Carl is currently an active and certified NROC coach!!

Aquatic Credentials

SSC NROC Level 1 & 2 Certified Swimming Coach (Singapore)

SSC NCAP Theory Level 1 & 2 Certification (Singapore)

Royal Life Saving Society (AUST), Swimming Instructor Level 1

AUSTSWIM Instructor

International Olympic Committee (IOC), Sports Administrator

Singapore Life Saving Society (SLSS), Life Saving Instructor

Professional Diploma in Outdoor Recreation (ANTA)

PADI / NAUI SCUBA Diving Instructor (USA)

PADI Medic First Aid Instructor (USA)

American Health & Safety Institute (ASHI), First Aid Trainer (USA)

Emergency Care & Safety Institute (ECSI), CPR/ First Aid/AED Instructor (USA)

SLSS Bronze Medallion & CPR Certificate

St John Ambulance Adult First Aid Certificate

CONTACT US

Courses & Expeditions Enquiries
Have a question?
